Are YOU interested in serving on the BCPS Board of Education?

Please see the posted information sheet and contact us with any questions.

Now is the time to decide if you want to run for election or apply for the Governor's appointment.

Thank you for stepping up to serve the students and staff of BCPS!

Are you interested on being on the BCPS Board of Education?

What exactly is the role of a Board of Education member?

A board member is expected to attend general meetings 2-3 times per month.

A board member is asked to serve on committees that also meet approximately 2 times per month.

A board member will participate in training and team building and community events.

A board member will serve for 4 years.

Requirements for Board of Education Nominees:

⦁ At least 21 years old

⦁ Baltimore County resident for at least 2 years

⦁ Not employed by Baltimore County Public Schools

⦁ Cannot have filed a certificate of candidacy for election to the county school board

⦁ Cannot be a candidate for or hold elected or appointed office for a political party or the local, state, or federal government

The role of the School Board is Governance.

The Board transforms the needs, wishes, and desires of the community into vision, goals, and policies. The Board is focused on the WHAT/WHY. The Board has a fiduciary duty to all children.

⦁ GOVERNANCE-develop the mission and strategic goals of the system. Appoint and evaluate the Superintendent. Determine educational standards.

⦁ LEGISLATIVE-Adopt policies and authorize curriculum. Advance legislative agenda to the County Council and Maryland General Assembly. Allocate funds to operations.

⦁ QUASI-JUDICIAL- Review policy appeals. Decide appeals of Superintendent’s administrative decisions.

The role of the Superintendent is management. He/she manages the day-to-day operation of the system. The Superintendent is focused on the HOW. He/she puts plans, systems procedures/regulations in place to accomplish the desired outcomes.

How do I get onto the Board of Education?

BCPS Board of Education is made up of:

⦁ 4 Governor Appointed members

⦁ 7 Councilmanic District Elected Representatives

⦁ 1 Student Member of the Board elected by secondary students

The deadline to file to run for BOE in your district is February 22, 2022. You will participate in the primary election in June 2022 (if there are more than 2 candidates from your district) and the general election in November 2022. Board of Education positions are non-partisan.

⦁ Will hold an information session on Wednesday January 26th at 7pm online

⦁ Applications will be available on Tuesday February 1st at noon and will be due on Wednesday March 2nd at 4pm

⦁ Interviews will begin on April 4th at Building E, Greenwood Campus, Towson from 6-9:30pm.

⦁ The commission will submit 8 names to the Governor in June.
